Vertebral Column The vertebral column has four spinal curves. The rest of the axial skeleton consists of the vertebral column, ribs, and sternum. The adult vertebral column , or spine, consists of 26 bones: the vertebrae (24), the sacrum, and the coccyx (tailbone). The vertebrae provide a bony column of support that bears the weight of the head, neck, and trunk. The delicate spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae. The bony column helps to maintain an upright body position. The total length of the vertebral column of an adult averages 71 cm (28 in.). The vertebral column is not straight and rigid. A lateral view shows four spinal curves: the cervical curve, thoracic curve, lumbar curve, and sacral curve.
