Early identification and support for adolescents struggling with emotional difficulties or considering risky behaviors is important. Talking to a counselor, getting mental health check-ups, and having people who care about them help them stay healthy and feel better. Sudden changes in mood or behavior and expressions of hopelessness or worthlessness are important signs that an adolescent may be going through emotional distress, possibly due to depression, anxiety, or unresolved trauma. Ageism Prejudice and discrimination against older adults can have a big impact on emotional expression and regulation, affecting the emotional well-being of older adults. Effects of Ageism ● Stereotypes and Negative Expectations: Society often holds negative stereotypes about aging, associating it with decline, needing help, and negativity. These stereotypes can change how others see and treat older adults, sometimes making them feel lonely and left out. ● Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: When exposed to negative stereotypes, older adults may start to believe them. This can lead to a decline in self-confidence and a reduced sense of control over their emotions. Gerontology and Ageism The field of gerontology, dedicated to the study of aging, helps fight ageism. Gerontologists work towards: ● Challenge Stereotypes: The study of older adults and the diversity and capabilities to break negative stereotypes and help create a more positive view of aging. ● Promote Individualized Care: Recognize the diversity within the aging population and advocate for individualized care and support services that meet the unique needs and abilities of each older adult. ● Advocate for Inclusion: Work to create policies and programs that ensure older adults can participate meaningfully in society and have access to the resources they need to maintain their well-being. C. Personality Personality refers to the combination of characteristics, traits, behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that make someone unique. It includes the patterns of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that mostly stay the same over time and influence how individuals interact with others and handle life situations. ● Reduced Opportunities: Ageism can limit their opportunities for work, travel and social activities. This adds to their feelings of frustration, anger, and helplessness.
