Anatomy & Physiology Study Guide

24.7 Aging As aging occurs, the kidneys shrink and have decreased blood flow. Other kidney related diseases that can occur are acute/chronic kidney inflammation, urinary tract infections (UTI), renal calculi, urinary retention/urinary incontinence, nocturia, hematuria, polyuria, and dysuria. 24.8 Chapter Twenty-Four Review The urinary system has several functions: • It serves to excrete useless and harmful waste material from blood plasma. Urea, uric acid, and creatinine are all filtered by the kidneys as waste products. • It removes excess material that is abnormally present in blood before it reaches harmful, excessive levels. • It provides maintenance via osmotic pressure regulation by controlling water levels and concentration. • Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the amount filtrate formed in the renal corpuscles of each kidney per minute. This is directly related to net filtration pressure.
