Anatomy & Physiology Study Guide

The Lower Limbs The lower limbs are adapted for locomotion and support. The lower limb consists of a femur (bone of the thigh), a patella (kneecap), a tibia and a fibula (leg), and the tarsal bones, metatarsal bones, and phalanges of the foot.

The Tarsal Bones The ankle, or tarsus, consists of seven tarsal bones. The large talus transmits the weight of the body from the tibia toward the toes. The articulation between the talus and the tibia occurs at the trochlea. The calcaneus , or heel bone, is the largest of the tarsal bones. When standing erect, weight is transmitted from the tibia, to the talus, to the calcaneus, and then to the ground.
