There are different types of phobias, and some of the most common ones are:
● Arachnophobia: Fear of spiders. ● Claustrophobia: Fear of enclosed (small) spaces. ● Acrophobia: Fear of heights. ● Agoraphobia: Fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable (e.g., crowded places, public transportation). ● Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia): This is a fear of social situations where a person may be judged by others. It's important to differentiate social anxiety disorder from just being shy. Shyness vs. Social Anxiety Disorder
Shyness
Social Anxiety Disorder
A stronger and lasting fear that can make social situations very difficult. People with social anxiety may feel nervous even before an event, like speaking in public or meeting new people. They may also worry too much about being judged or embarrassed.
A personality trait where a person prefers familiar places and does not like being the center of attention. Shy individuals may feel uncomfortable in social situations but can still manage daily activities.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) OCD is an anxiety disorder where a person has repeated, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and feels the need to do certain actions over and over (compulsions). While OCD can occur at any age, it normally starts in childhood or adolescence and may affect a person’s development. ● Obsessions: These are thoughts, images or urges that keep coming back and cause anxiety and distress. Common obsessions include: > Fear of germs and dirt > Needing things to be in perfect order > Worrying about hurting others or losing control ● Compulsions: Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels forced to do to reduce obsessions or reduce anxiety. Examples include:
> Washing hands too much > Checking if doors are locked many times > Arranging things in a specific way > Counting silently over and over
While compulsions may temporarily relieve anxiety, they can become very time-consuming and interfere with daily life.
